Svelte 4: smaller, faster, and readying the ground for Svelte 5

Announced on 22 June 2023, Svelte 4 was a maintenance-heavy release that improved performance and set up the framework's next major transition.

Svelte 4 did not try to be revolutionary. Its job was to modernize the baseline, reduce package weight, improve hydration output, and clean up authoring and tooling assumptions before the bigger Svelte 5 rewrite landed.

The release shipped smaller and faster hydration code, a dramatically smaller package size, fewer dependencies, better custom-element behavior, and a more intuitive authoring experience.

That made it a strategically useful release. It gave existing apps a cleaner foundation and gave the core team room to pursue a much more ambitious next major without dragging older assumptions forward forever.
